“Alongside and Together” primarily seeks to generate a debate about the way we inhabit space. We are accustomed to believing that public space exists entirely beyond the boundaries of the home. Yet, as long as we look and are being looked at, we can speak of the presence of public space even within the intimacy of our own house.
How do you build a house that supports the harmonious development of a family over time? The architecture of dwelling binds and unbinds its members daily, sequentially, almost in an endless loop. The house’s interior and exterior spaces operate according to emotional rules—of closeness and distance between those who inhabit it.
To value closeness, must one not first be aware of its daily wear?
To what extent does the private space we all need switch on and off—and then ignite again in different corners of the house, at different moments of the day?
Each living space acquires—an independent structure, its own light—an identity.
On the outside, the resulting rooms are treated as a unified whole, becoming a house; on the inside, each expresses itself honestly through its distinct structure.
